I had the privilege of interning with Dr. Scott Lambert at Stanford Medical School, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and the Byers Eye Institute. While there, I was tasked with creating a comprehensive registry of NICUs across Sub-Saharan Africa in addition to surveying neonatologists and ophthalmologists in Africa to better understand their current management of retinopathy of prematurity. As a result of these efforts, our findings were published and catalyzed the obtaining of funding for oxygen management devices in hospitals across Africa. The implementation of these devices is already decreasing mortality rates and the incidence of ROP in premature infants.

In addition to conducting research, I also had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Lambert (and others) multiple days each week, participating in grand rounds, attending journal clubs, and taking advantage of beautiful Northern California on the weekends.

Working with physicians at Stanford and across Africa opened my eyes to the many opportunities there are to help patients on a global scale. I realized that many of the biggest problems waiting to be solved in medicine have less to do with making a groundbreaking scientific discovery in a lab and more to do with increasing equitable access to healthcare.

My summer at Stanford with Dr. Lambert was the highlight of my time as a student at BYU. It cemented my goals to become a physician and medical researcher, and it opened doors for me to pursue these aspirations. In addition to the impactful research I conducted and the incredible professional growth I experienced, I also formed friendships that I will cherish forever. This fall, I will be attending either Johns Hopkins or UCLA for medical school, and I know I would not have these opportunities if it weren’t for Dr. Lambert and my experiences at Stanford.
