Sam Parry
Medical Student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine

My name is Sam Parry. I am originally from Bountiful, Utah and I am a medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in Manhattan, New York. I was part of the SRIP program the summer before I applied to medical school. I studied biostatistics at BYU and was able to use those skills in the SRIP program. I worked with a lab affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School studying brain wave activity in rats on a ketogenic diet. This experience, though only 12 weeks long, provided me with a valuable opportunity to devote my fulltime to a research project at a research powerhouse program. The support I received was excellent. My SRIP experience came up in several medical school interviews and I think played an essential role in helping me get accepted at NYU. I was also able to define some of my career research-based goals while I was in Boston which has led me to pursue a dual MD/Masters degree at NYU in hopes of incorporating more research in my future career.
In addition to research, the SRIP provided wonderful clinical opportunites. I was able to shadow physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital and meet medical professionals from many different fields, which gave me an early idea of what field of medicine I would like to end up in.
This was an experience of growth and incredible fulfillment. It was a pillar of my BYU experience and will be a summer full of lessons that I reflect on as my medical career progresses. I learned how to conduct independent research, consult with experts from various fields, and got to experience what it was like to function within a prestigious institution.
