Summer Premed Research Internships

First and foremost, we seek to fund more Summer Premed Research Internships. Through these internships, students clarify their interests in medicine, develop research skills, build personal and professional networks within medicine and the Church, and enhance their likelihood of successful admission to medical school.
Although BYU does have many fantastic faculty and research mentors, BYU students are at a disadvantage as we do not have formal ties to a medical school. In addition, we have over 400 students apply to medical school each year (about 10-15th in the country for number of applicants) and that means students are competing for and may be unable to find excellent experiences. As we have run this program for four years, it has become clear that providing financial support for students is imperative. In addition, many labs and medical schools will only accept research interns if they are funded. We have more mentors willing to support students and more qualified students that are interested in completing the internships than we do resources to support them. Housing costs in the Bay Area and Boston are especially expensive. We have typically funded each student with between $4,000 and $8,000 for their summer experience. We seek donations to increase the number of students benefiting from this program. All donations will go directly to funding student internships and will be managed by the Society and the BYU Preprofessional Advisement Center.
Ultimately we hope to build a substantial endowment which would provide yearly funding for 50 students.
Operation of the Society
Although we have and will continue to run the Society efficiently, funds are needed to enhance the website, develop marketing materials, pay for printing and mailing, and support the overall functioning and ultimately growth of the society. The funds will be managed by the Board.
