Summer PreMed Research Internship

History of the BYU Harvard/Stanford Summer Premedical Research Internship Program (SRIP).

The BYU SRIP was founded by two physicians and BYU alumni, Britlyn Orgill and Josh Jaramillo, to enable students to obtain high quality research experience at leading medical schools in the country.
The rationale for founding the program was based on their observations that:

1) Although BYU sends more than 200 students a year to medical schools, the number receiving offers from some of the top medical schools in the country remains relatively low.
2) BYU students are at a competitive disadvantage as the University does not have a medical school nor a direct affiliation with a medical school. BYU is the only university in the top 20 for number of MD applicants/matriculates each year that does not have a formal relationship with a medical school. This makes obtaining research, volunteer, and clinical experiences more difficult.
3) Approximately 450 BYU students apply to medical school each year. This means that 2000 or more premed undergraduates are competing for similar research experiences. Despite excellent faculty and opportunities at BYU, this means that many simply cannot find experiences that will make them more competitive.

In 2017, Drs. Jaramillo and Orgill began recruiting faculty on their respective campuses (Stanford and Harvard, respectively) to provide summer research experiences for BYU premed students. Although this program started with just a few students the first summer, more than 20 students each year are now offered experiences. These experiences have been funded typically at $8,000 per student to enable them to live and work across the country for 12-16 weeks. Funding has been obtained through the Simmons Center for Cancer Research at BYU, the BYU College of Life Sciences, BYU Student Life and faculty at the hosting institutions.

As the program has developed, other faculty members at prominent universities have expressed interest or have been recruited to participate including the University of Utah, Vanderbilt University and Johns Hopkins University.

The goal of this program is to eventually provide summer research internships for 50 BYU students. Alumni of the program have gone on to prominent medical schools throughout the country. We have highlighted a few of the students below.
